Breaking the Microwave Oven habit

Dear Healthy Homemakers,

I did it! I have been living without my microwave oven going on now for nearly 2 months. My teenage son was very sad at first, but re-heating foods tastes so much better in the convection oven. We were able to get one at Costco for about $39.00.

It just takes a few minutes longer than a microwave oven. Even when defrosting.

I was able to find great deals on oven proof cookware at the local thrift stores.

As we are preparing for the upcoming Apple Valley Emergency Preparedness/Sustainability Fair this summer I'll be saving up for a solar cooker (the Sun oven will be on demonstration). We'll also be putting a DVD together on building your own solar oven. This will help as we try to get away from using electricity. It seems like our electric bill keeps going up each month.

We've set up our solar clothes dryer (hanging our clothes outside). The weather has been warm enough lately where it only takes about 1/2 an hour to an hour to dry. I ran a PVC pipe 1 1/2") through our chain link in the dog kennel and put a split PVC on either end, so that way it wouldn't slide out, so I can hang heavier items on it, like blankets. I'll have to post some pictures.

If you are going to continue to use your microwave oven, I recommend that you use the lower power setting when heating. Otherwise, start by unplugging your microwave, then placing it out in storage and then eventually get rid of it.

Most places charge $5 to dispose of a microwave oven or you can check with your local metal recycling center as we have one that will take it off of your hands and not charge you.

Let me here how it goes for you and your family!

Your healthy homemaker,
Patricia
